Scovill
Pavilion began its life (circa 1948) as a summer cottage
on Lake Decatur for Rose and Guy Scovill.
Later donated to the Decatur Park District, the
historic building was in need of extensive improvements to
fulfill a valuable role as a year-round meeting place for
various organizations.
The cottage and surrounding Oriental Gardens are
being renovated with Park District Funds and a gift from a
local manufacturing company.
Improvements include the installation of heating,
air conditioning, hot water, energy-efficient windows, and
handicapped access. Landscaping
and gardens will be planted to connect the cottage and its
re-established picnic grounds to the nearby Oriental
Gardens and gazebo. A
new patio will also be added overlooking one of the best
views on Lake Decatur. |

Other services for this park
include the design of a 4,500 sq. ft. animal holding/quarantine
facility for the Scovill Children’s Zoo.
This facility, and a food preparation building also
designed by BWC, will serve as key components in helping the zoo
achieve accreditation from the American Zoological Association
AZA).

The animal holding/quarantine building allows for
housing animals through the winter months, and provides quarters
for treatment of sick or injured animals.
The design challenge was to combine an aesthetically
pleasing building that was both durable and cost efficient while
meeting AZA accreditation requirements.
